The Mifflin-Juniata Agency on Aging Office is offering IncomeTax Assistance and Tax/Rent Rebates for Seniors

Tax Counselors are ready to begin a new year of income tax preparation. Starting Wednesday, February 1st and each Wednesday through April 11th. Tax Counselors will be available at no charge to assist seniors age 60 and older with tax preparation and questions. To qualify for help your income can not exceed $50,000.

Age doesn't exempt anyone from filing taxes. Individual who earns,recieves and/or realizes $33 or more in gross PA income should file. This doesn't mean that you owe tax but you're required to file. Many qualify for tax forgiveness and owe nothing.

Tax prepares will need you to bring the following items in order to complete your income taxes:*Previous years tax return (if you filed) *W-2 forms * Dividend and interest statements *1099 Social Security form *Railroad and Pension statements * 2011 Real estate tax receipts * Proof if you purchased your first home *Proof if you purchased a new vehicle in 2011 including date of purchase.

Volunteers will be assisting seniors with help in completing Property Tax/Rent Rebate Applications

The rebate program benefits eligible Pennsylvanians who are 65 and older, Widows and Widowers 50 and older, and individuals with disabilities 18 and older. Income eligibility level for the Property Tax Rebate is $35,000 a year or less and income level for Rent Rebate is $15,000 excluding half your Social Security for both programs. The maximum rebate for both owners and renters is $650.

Please bring the following proof of 2011 income recieved for a Property Tax / Rent Rebate: *1099 Social Security forms *Interest and Dividend statements, Pension and Retirement statements including Railrod Retirement Tier 1 and Tier 2 *W-2 forms * Any other income recieved in 2011. *Also, bring your 2011 Property Tax bills stamped paid by tax collector and/or *a completed Rent Certificate Affidavit filled out by your landlord (found in your Rebate book). *Completed Federal or PA income tax return if you're required to file taxes for 2011.

Bring the following if you have never received a rebate before: *Proof of age *Proof of permanent disability *Proof of widow or widower status.

United Way's "Money in Your Pocket" Free Tax Preparation Program

Need to get your taxes filed? Want them done for free? If you (and your spouse) made less then $49,000 in 2011, then you may be in luck. The United Way of Mifflin-Juniata is launching its 4th annual "Money in Your Pocket VITA" (Volunterr Income Tax Assistance) campaign. IRS Certified volunteers will be available to complete your tax returns and help you find some tax credits in the process - FOR FREE! VITA sites will be operating in Lewistown and Mifflintown January 23 through April 14, 2012. The United Way office will beging accepting calls January 16, 2012 to schedule appointments for tax preparation. Call 717-248-9636.
